Pouring Through History

For one of my classes in the spring of 2024, UX students were paired with journalism students to create a visual design for their articles. My partner wrote an essay about the history of whiskey in Peoria, and what the industry looks like today.

My Process

I began by working closely with Erik on deciding how to match the tone he was aiming for visually. There were multiple rounds of iterations starting as early as the moodboard. As his paper evolved, so did the style we were aiming for. Initially, the design was going to very card focused and more interactive. As his paper shifted to be more a story, we agreed it made more sense to create something linear.

The visual design was built entirely in Figma, using mainly visuals provided to us by the companies Erik interviewed. Animations were added to make the whole thing come together and feel more cohesive.

This project taught me a lot about how to work with someone who is not also a designer, as this was the first time that had happened. It also was stylistically very different from my previous projects, making it a difficult yet fun challenge!

Final Product

The full article with animations can be read via the figma prototype!
